JibberJobber Contacts What happens when I downgrade to the free account Heres an important question that comes up quite a bit: What happens to contacts that I add to JibberJobber if my account switches to the free status? I wont lose them, as noted elsewhere, but will I be able to benefit from them being in the system? This is a great question. The short answer is, nothing happens to the contacts, you dont lose them, and you will benefit from them being in the system. Remember, I created JibberJobber when I was a job seeker. I was not interested in any system that would make me feel worse than a third class citizen (which is how most job seekers feel). I wanted respect. I needed to know I would not waste time on a system that would only bait-and-switch me, or make me upgrade, or worse, where I would eventually lose access to my data! We want you to have a JibberJobber account for life. Most people start using it because they are looking for a new job (aka, in transition). Once they land their job, they should continue to use JibberJobber go manage professional relationships, to prepare for the next transition, to manage personal relationships maybe just to schedule their oil changes and tire rotations! You see, for some people this becomes life management many things we are trying to keep track of, and follow-up on, can be managed with JibberJobber. Heres how this works When you first sign up for JibberJobber, you get 14 days of the full premium account. This allows you to import in bulk (hundreds, thousands, or hundreds of thousands of records). This is also a great time to play around with the amazingly useful Email2Log feature. The limit on the free account is 500 Contacts and 500 Companies. Lets say you upload, from LinkedIn, Gmail, Outlook, CardScan, Salesforce, ACT!, or any other place (including your own spreadsheet), 2,000 Contacts. That is clearly over the limit so what happens? When you go back to the free level (whether this is from the premium trial, or an upgrade that you paid for, or that an outplacement company bought for you, etc.), and you are over the 500 limit, you cannot add anymore contacts (unless you upgrade). But the 2,000 Contacts you have in your system? They are completely usable. This means you can: edit the Contact information, add Log Entries and Action Items, associate the Contact to Jobs and Companies, delete the Contact, etc. The only limit is that you cannot add more Contacts but Contacts that you have added into the system are there for you to use. Want to add more Contacts? The easiest thing to do is to upgrade. Its $9.95 a month, one time, or subscription. The most popular upgrade is the $60/year upgrade, which is basically 1/2 price. You can be happier by reading this post
You can be happier by reading this post Im pretty sure that the people who pay attention to happiness research are actually happier people. And happiness begets happiness. So I have a feeling that me just writing a post about happiness, and you reading it makes us all happier. Here is why I think that: Recently, Gretchen Rubin sent me her new book, The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun. Let me tell you now, I am not a huge fan of the book. She is writing about her life, but her life is not all that interesting. The thing about reading stories about peoples lives is that we like conflict. Thats what every novel is, its what every memoir is. If theres no conflict then there is no path to follow in a story line. Gretchens conflict in this story about her is how can she be happier. Gretchen reports that she is already happy. She has an investment banker husband, two seemingly just fine daughters, a nice apartment in Manhattan, former-model good looks, etc. She basically (as she says in her forward to the book) needs something to talk about at cocktail parties. So she is writing a book so she can talk about it. What I realized, though, is that while Gretchens conflict doesnt make for great reading, it is good to surround yourself with people like Gretchen: People who are basically happy and want to talk about it. Because happiness is contagious. So I kept reading the book. And, you know what? I didnt love the book, but I love that it made me think a lot more about the stuff she wrote about. (Not that New York City is the place to be happy, by the way. Its not. Its not because people in NYC value being interesting over being happy which probably presents a special problem to Gretchen at cocktail parties, but I wont go into that. Also, its clear that happy people attract happy people because Live Science reports that people in New York City are more unhappy than the rest of the country.) Tiziana Casciaro, professor at University of Toronto, does really interesting research about social skills. And one thing she told me is that its very hard to gauge your own progress in the social skills department, but if you are making a conscious effort to improve your social skills then it is a safe bet that they are, on some level, improving. And there is research that if you focus on something every day, by either writing it down every day, or at least committing to prioritizing it each day you are much more likely to achieve that. I think the same is true about happiness. If you pay attention to the research, whether or not you consciously implement it, the mere act of accessing the information is commitment enough to instigate change in your happiness level. (You can type happiness into the search box on the sidebar of my blog to find the results of my own obsessive collection of research on this topic.) The other thing that should make you want to talk about happiness and read about happiness is that to think that you can affect your own happiness is a fundamentally positive step. Optimism about the future is a keystone of happiness. And people who think they have control over the outcome of their life that they are the locus of control are happier. If you say all the happiness research is tiresome and circular which I have said before it might be true, but thinking that way actually does not improve your happiness. (Although it does probably make your more interesting, because conflict and cynicism are interesting.) Sonja Lyubomirsky, psychology professor at the University of California-Riverside, wrote a great book on all the tiny little things you can do to make yourself happier on a daily basis. The book is The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want. Its an inspiring book because the things we can do are so small, like, give someone a surprise compliment. But you dont need to do that today. And neither do I. Because I think, for today, getting to the end of this post counts.

UMass Students Are Sucked Into the World of Personal Branding - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak to an entire group at The University of Massachusetts (Dartmouth). The class had little to no knowledge about personal branding, social media or how to manage their careers. I was actually very surprised when I asked them to raise their hands if they were on Facebook or LinkedIn. About 70% were on Facebook and almost none of them had heard of LinkedIn. I made an effort to explain the importance of their participation on both networks and how to leverage them for career success. I mentioned other popular tools, but since this was so new to them, I really wanted to concentrate my efforts on the main ones. My presentation was divided into a few sections, with the objective of giving them an overview of the topic and then diving into key subtopics that they need to focus on as they apply for jobs. The first point I made was that in February there were 63,000 job cuts, which was an increase over January and the most in the past 4.5 years. Next, I made the point that students dont learn how to get a job during school. They learn about philosophy, psychology, math, science and history, but there is a huge gap for personal branding. As with all of my presentations, I have a slide dedicated to the origins of personal branding, where I talk about Tom Peters famous article and then hammer in that starting today you are a brand! Since it was a sports marketing class, I brought up a picture of Tiger Woods and asked them to describe him and the first word that came to mind was a corporate brand (Nike). Then I explained how your brand is self-impression = perception. The goal being to match what you think of yourself to what others think of you. Other topics I spoke about were your brand is searchable, a definition and a breakdown of personal branding into 3 elements (value proposition, differentiation marketability). We got into eBranding, blogs, social networks, reputation management and seven success stories from young individuals who I have encountered on the web. Overall, I felt like I opened their eyes and at a minimum, made them think twice about their resume and their approach to the job hunt. Do You Have A Tombstone Resume Do You Have A Tombstone Resume? Job Search / Resume Writing The best resumes, the ones that will get a hiring managerâs attention, are marketing documents. They are designed to sell you (the product) to a potential employer (the buyer). They are not laundry lists of responsibilities. They are not boring employment histories. They donât include every job youâve ever had or every single thing youâve done during your career. That style of resume is sometimes called a âTombstoneâ resume because it is directed towards the past, not the future. Your future. When youâre putting together your resume keep these 5 things in mind. 1) Your resume is a marketing tool. Itâs not an employment history or a job application. While you should never lie or grossly exaggerate, you should frame the content in a way that sells you to a potential employer. Heres why lies matter. 2) Generally, thereâs no need to provide details that go back more than 10 to 15 years in your career. Employers are most interested in your current or most recent position and possibly the one before that. Think of your resume like a funnel with the space dedicated declining as the years increase. 3) Focus on the future rather than the past. This means highlighting the skills and abilities you want to use in your target position. For example, if you have a variety of marketing experience but your goal is to work in digital marketing, feature achievements that showcase your digital marketing expertise. 4) In most cases, dont waste valuable resume space on dated professional development activities unless they are particularly important to your target position or industry. For example, an educator who has completed D.A.R.E. training will want to include that even if it was a decade ago. 5) Before you begin, have a target position. If you are considering corporate controller and tax accountant pick one. While job seekers often want to include everything they can do, an unfocused resume will not serve you well. Once you are finished writing your resume evaluate it with the âso what?â factor in mind. You may have established key-performance indicators, but what difference did it make?
