An App Can Check Cholesterol

An App Can Check Cholesterol An App Can Check Cholesterol Today you can monitor your heart rate, take your blood pressure, check your glucose, and also test your eye sight, using smartphone apps or attachments. Now you will also be able to read your cholesterol level, using a device developed by Cornell engineers. The Smartphone Cholesterol Application for Rapid Diagnostics, or smartCARD, is developed by David Erickson, associate professor of mechanical engineering and his colleagues at Cornell University. The smartCARD accessory optically detects biomarkers in a drop of blood, sweat, or saliva. An app then discerns the results using color analysis. The test takes about a minute from the time when one puts a drop of blood on the test strip, says Erickson. When a user puts a drop of blood on the cholesterol test strip, it processes the blood through staffelung steps and chemical reactions. The strip is then ready for colorimetric analysis by the smartphone app. Accurate Results The ad vantages of doing this over a phone are the convenience and ease of use, says Erickson, Everyone already knows how to use a smartphone. The smartCARD accessory clamps over the phones camera. Its built-in flash provides uniform, diffused light to illuminate the test strip that fits into the smartCARD reader. The application in the phone calibrates the hue saturation to the images color values on the cholesterol test strip, and the results appear on your phone. The smartCARD accessory clamps over the phones camera and an app then discerns the results using color analysis. Image Cornell University With many years of experience in molecular diagnostics behind him, Erickson acknowledges that the technology was very difficult to deploy to the consumer level earlier. Several years ago, when it became obvious that smartphones will become omnipresent across the world, we started looking at ways we could adapt that technology with the smartphone ecosystem. The smartCARD reader is a result of E ricksons extensive collaboration with nutrition scientists, electrical engineers, and bioengineers. We already have an established market of people using home-based cholesterol diagnostics devices but this technology breaks out of the business model that those types of devices are based on. The devices we have shown in our paper (published in the journal Lab on a Chip) are equivalently accurate, he says. Currently, the test measures total cholesterol. Erickson and his colleagues are working to break out those numbers in LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol), and triglyceride measurements. They are also working on detecting vitamin D and B12 levels and developing nutritional markers. There is going to be a broad swath available, says Erickson. Diagnostics for Developing World Other smartphone-based diagnostic devices, such as the one developed by Dr. Aydogan Ozcan of UCLAs School of Engineering and Applied Science that enables the imaging of objects at nanoscale, highlight th e efforts being made to bring diagnostic options to the developing world. Erickson envisions a huge kompetenz for smartphone-based low-cost diagnostics in the developing world and going forward he is also considering cancer-based diagnostics for those regions, It seems very clear to me that mobile health is the next big thing. Tapping into the mobile network in those areas can be very impactful. The smartCARD, says Erickson is ready to be brought to market immediately, adding that when the reader hits the market, the cost will be significantly lower than what exists now. We can meet the state of the art in accuracy and beat the state of the art in cost and variability. Listen to a podcast with Prof. David Erickson discussing the challenges of developing smartphone-based diagnostics applications. For Further Discussion We can meet the state of the art in accuracy and beat the state of the art in cost and variability.Prof. David Erickson, Cornell University

How I measure happiness

How I measure happinessHow I measure happinessThe dialogue about happiness has not changed much for the past 3000 years since ancient Greek and Roman times. But people pretend that everything has changed and that more people are unhappy than ever. Thats supposed to be because were more connected than ever. You read it all the time. Technology makes people feel lonely and depressedI agree that technology itself has changed. But human nature has not. People have been unhappy, lonely, miserable, and sad since the start of modern civilization. We still ask ourselves questions likeDo I like my job?How about my house?Does my partner make me happy? How much money do I need to be happy?Weve been thinking like that for centuries. And if you have a similar thinking process, I can tell you that its wrong.Conventional thinking about happiness implies that other things or peoplemakeus happy. Have you ever thought about that? Why is it that we believesomethingalways has to make us happy?I think thats the biggest harte nuss with happiness. Why do we keep associating happiness with external things like career, love, and money? When are you happy? When you have a job that you love? A good relationship with your partner? A bunch of money? But what about when you get bored with your job? Or when your relationship becomes impossible to bear? Or when your money never seems enough?Ive written about how I pursue usefulness instead of happiness. And that when you make yourself useful, you feel happy.A lot of people resonated with that idea because it puts ourselves in the drivers seat. But that raised an important question. How do I know Im happy? Its a question you can only ask when you think about this concept on a deeper level. You see, most of us never think about measuring happiness. Or, we simply assume we know how to do it.Yes, we can define our career, money, relationship, and health goals- and we make those things measurable. And yet, we dont measure the one thing that makes all those t hings worth it Our own happiness.Never rely on externals for your happinessThats my only measure for happiness. I ask myself Am I relying on something or someone to make me happy?I want my answer to be no. Let me explainI love my work, but it doesnt make me happy.I love my family, but they dont make me happy.I love my other half, but she doesnt make me happy.I just AM happy.Life is too short to go through personal suffering. We cant put our own happiness in other peoples hands.Happiness is astate of mind. Its entirely within your control.Just like you can make a decision to do something useful with your time, you can decide that you are happy. But nothing in my life makes me happy. There you go again Youre trapped in the old way of thinking. Its easy to blame your job, spouse, family, or even the world for your unhappiness.I meet people all the time who say that the world is an evil place. Yes, bad things happen to people. And yes, some people are evil. Im not going to pretend those t hings do not happen. But is that within your control? No. So get over yourself and dont let other thingsmakeyou miserable. Its time to stop being a cynic.Remember You dont need a reason to be happy. Thats the whole idea in one sentence. But saying it is very different from truly living it.All you need to do isbehappy - and you are.If you want to hear more thoughts on measuring happiness, listen to my latest podcast episode about it, oniTunes,Stitcher, orOvercast. This article first appeared on DariusForoux.com.

9 SelfImprovement Strategies for Engineers

9 SelfImprovement Strategies for Engineers 9 SelfImprovement Strategies for Engineers Its all goodyouve graduated with a degree in engineering and landed a good job with an engineering firm that promises a stimulating environment and maybe even some interesting travel. Youre all set, right? Not necessarilyengineering is a competitive field and, as evidenced during the Great Recession, susceptible to big layoffs when the economy takes a dive. So what you can do in your first five years as a professional engineer to strengthen your long-term career and make you stand out from the competition? Here are some pointers from Carl Vieth, director of corporate education for the department of engineering professional development, University of Wisconsin-Madison.Learn the business. What is the core business strategy, how is company revenue made, and what are key sources of growth? Seek out opportunities to work with a diverse cross-section of business units within the company, including HR, manuf acturing, sales, marketing, and customer service. You may also find that your company offers boot-camp style learning opportunities that will give you a deeper understanding of your industry.Develop a love affair with your customers.Understand their business better than you understand your own and learn how your customers make money. Request assignments that allow you to work directly at a customer site be inquisitive about their needs and strive to understand how you can solve their problems. Regularly read market publications and familiarize yourself with what industry analysts are saying. Know your customers competitive marketplace and understand who their key competitors are, as well as the relative strength of the competitions value proposition relative to that of your customer, says Smith.Learn the upstream supply chain.Understand the sources and producers of inputs to your business. Become familiar with the variety of options available that you can bring to your organization. Strive to keep on top of technical innovations, both within your field and other engineering and technology disciplines.Dont stop learning.College has left you woefully unprepared for many of the challenges you will face (its true). Becoming an effective communicator, team member or leader, or project manager are worthy goals to aggressively pursue. Seeking out professional development activities related to growing your soft skills will drive professional growth in dimensions you never knew existed, says Smith.Keep your technical skills current.Join a professional society and participate as an active member. Share what you learn with your colleagues at work. If your local work group does not have a journal club or study circle, consider starting one. Engineering associations also provide professional learning opportunities, including short courses and online learning. Search for universities that are active in providing technical education in your field.Find a coach.Being independe nt types, engineers often feel they have to do it alone. Find a coach within the organization who can provide valuable advice, direction, and support. More important than having technical credibility, your coach should be adept at navigating the organization. Find the engineer who business leaders and customers seek out when they want to get an answer or solve a problem, advises Smith. Once youve established the relationship, honor it by listening carefully, following the advice, and carrying yourself in ways that will make your coach proud.Seek out new challenges and challenging assignments. The term stretch assignment defines an opportunity to challenge your knowledge, skills, and creativity in new and different ways. Challenging assignments take you out of your comfort zone and provide you with opportunities to set yourself apart.Critique your performance.Practice your new skills and try to be self-aware and realistic about how youre progressing. New abilities dont come easily and those who excel in their own personal development take advantage of opportunities that sharpen their skills and grow their knowledge base through practice.Think about the next step in your education. You wont get far without a graduate degree and you need to start planning, Smith advises. A few years of work experience will allow you to make the most of your next learning opportunity and to rediscover the joy in formal learning.Mark Crawford is an independent writer.Seeking out professional development activities related to growing your soft skills will drive professional growth in dimensions you never knew existed.Carl Vieth, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Successful people know a truth about quitting most dont get

Successful people know a truth about quitting most dont getSuccessful people know a truth about quitting most dont getFor a writer - or at least, for this writer - there are few worse experiences than realizing that an article youve spent weeks or months researching is, well, going nowhere.Theres always the temptation to do even more research, to write something up anyway, if only to justify those weeks or months of reporting as anything other than wasted time. This is a completely illogical impulse, but its a human impulse nonetheless. The New York Times addresses this phenomenon in a recent article on the art of strategic quitting, a term borrowed from author and entrepreneur Seth Godin. Stephanie windschatten explains why were so often loathed to stop pursuing a longtime goal, even one that has proven unattainable. Lee also explains why doing so would ultimately make us happier, and would free us up to pursue other, more realistic ambitions.Reading the Times article, I thought bac k to Jon Acuffs advice in his 2017 book Finish Choose what to bomb.Acuff virtually shakes readers until they understand that there is no way they can achieve everything they want to think being an awesome parent, being a stellar employee, keeping a pristine home, cooking a nutritious dinner every night, and volunteering on the community board.Instead, Acuff tells readers to choose in advance what theyre going to bomb - i.e. fail at - and to be okay with that. The logic here is that, the more thinly you spread your time and energy, the less progress you make toward each individual goal. Pick one goal and give it your all and youll have a better shot at success. It seems impossible to become an expert in one area without giving up on some othersPsychologists have also documented the benefits - and sometimes the necessity - of quitting one goal to focus on another. In the Times article, Lee cites a 2007 study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, which found that w hen people disengaged from unrealistic goals, they were happier and healthier.Meanwhile, Anders Ericsson, a professor of psychology at Florida State University and the coauthor of Peak Secrets From the New Science of Expertise, previously told me that he doesnt know of anyone whos become a world-class expert in more than one skill. If you dedicate your life to mastering one field, other opportunities will fade away - which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how much you want to master that one field.Gabriele Oettingen, a professor at New York University and the University of Hamburg and the author of Rethinking Positive Thinking, developed a methodology called WOOP to help people achieve their goals. (WOOP stands for wish, outcome, obstacle, plan.)Oettingen previously told me that WOOP-ing often requires you to step away from a goal if it conflicts with another one, or if it seems unfeasible. To be sure, sometimes this process will be painful - theres no getting aro und that. But in the long term, giving yourself room to work on something more achievable, or more impactful, is worth it.This article first appeared on Business Insider.

topwomenblogs Its Saturday, I have to get to Baltimore from NYC to start family time for Christmas (my husband is from the DC area). So Ill leave you all with two good links to content and blogs I read this week by women authors. One made me laugh and one made me think. Its pretty obvious which one did what.1. New Years Resolutions Dog Who Balances Food - It Just Made Me Laugh Source Swiss-Miss Getting Ahead of New Years Resolutions cupofjo.com Related Articles Around the Web Top 100 Women Blogs And Websites Every Woman Must Follow One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile s ome industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in con struction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the wertzuwachs of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the N ational Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting wome n in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

7 Ways to Tell if Someone Would Make a Good Boss

7 Ways to Tell if Someone Would Make a Good Boss7 Ways to Tell if Someone Would Make a Good Boss3If you had the perfect babo, what personality traits would he or she possess? Agoodboss can make a decentjob great Answering this important question, prior to an interview, is a great job search tool. To help you decide what youd like to have in a future manager here are seven personality traits that could be at the top of your list.7 Ways to Tell if Someone Would Make a Good Boss1. You share similar professional values. If you want work happiness your boss should share similar values. What are your values or the things in life that are important to you? For example some of your values might be family, a sense of accomplishment, hard work and most importantly, work flexibility.During the interview ask what his or her professional values are. And if you cant find the companys values on their website, ask about them as well. Do some of them match yours? Then this manager may be a good match for you.2. They are open and approachable. While interviewing you can watch how your potential boss handles interruptions like people knocking on the door or from their phone. Notice their body language while listening to your questions as well as while theyre answering.Do they appear closed up with arms crossed and sitting far from the table or are they engaged by leaning forward and arms on the table. Do they encourage you to keep asking questions? If so, you can safely assume their door will always be open.3. They like to stay in touch. While in your interview ask your potential manager how he or she stays in touch with their kollektiv especially if most have flexible work schedules.Do they host quick morning meetings or weekly meetings to get everyone on the same page? Is there an online tool they manage where people can check in on work progress or do they use a team chat app? If there are processes like unterstellung in place your manager understands that a good relationship is like a two-way street.4. They set goals that motivate the team and creates a cool mini-culture.Aiming to hit team goals gives the team a purpose to do mora than just hit the numbers. These goals can form a culture within the team thats empowering. Ask about an example of a recent goal the team accomplished, how the manager motivated them, and how the teams behavior was affected (hopefully positively). If most of the team has flexible work schedules, how have they grown their mini-culture? If you learn about some positive experiences you can bet your to-be manager will aim to be a great one.5. They are open to giving and receiving feedback.Find out how the team is strengthened with positive feedback and constructive criticism. How has it fueled the growth and mini-culture theyve got going on?This is more than performance reviews that HR facilitates, although you should find out if the company hosts these or not. This is about how the teams management continues to shape the team by dis hing out kudos or show ways to improve. If you value being given a sense of direction then this manager would be the one for you.6. They are a good leader within the company as well as the team.A goodboss is not afraid to stick up for their teams needs, like work flexibility. If you get the opportunity to talk to your potential co-workers ask what kind of leader their manager is.Have they ever seen their manager go to bat for the team? How did the company react? If you feel admiration you can have faith your to-be boss will lead you and your future team in the right direction.7. Theyre both a good listener and a good coach.A good boss can act as a good sounding motherboard where you are free to express your thoughts with little fear of judgment. Your potential manager should listen to you intently while interviewing.Ask yourself if you feel like youre really being heard. To test, ask your to-be manager a question based on what you just said. Can you tell if they got your point provi ng that they truly listening? Your winter accessories are disgusting and full of germs

Your winter accessories are disgusting and full of germsYour winter accessories are disgusting and full of germsIt was recently reported that the flu is pretty bad this year (between 6 and 7 million people have had it in the U.S. so far this winter) which means germs are everywhere. So to combat that (and the cold weather in a lot of the country) we bundle ourselves up in our hats, gloves, scarves, snoods, face masks, etc., But it turns out those winter accessories may have the most germs of allAccording to researchers from the University of Virginia, viruses can survive outside of your body for weeks. Weve written about how disgusting your office is regularly which means your hands are constantly coming into contact withE. coli, flu, and cold germs and then you are going and sticking your hands in gloves which are thus completely contaminated.According to Swirled, flu germs can live on your gloves for two to three days and stomach viruses including rotavirus and norovirus can stay t here up to four weeks Your gloves are weapons of mass destruction at this point. But gloves arent the only culprit. That fun striped scarf you are wearing is absolutely disgusting too. Scarves come in contact with your hair and lips and lets face it, many of us use them as a couch receptacle which literally just puts the germs right back in us.Basically, the lesson here is to wash your winter clothes at least a few times a season, even though it is annoying.

Law school is a stressful time for students, with intense competition, little sleep, and the pressure of the time and money theyve invested in pursuit of a degree, says Wilson. Since our office controls enrollment, grades, and exams, we often deal very directly with students frustrations.Photo of Tyler Wilson courtesy of Tyler Wilson.Using his improv skills, he can listen carefully and suss out whats really going on with his students (and, more importantly, how to help them). Good performers listen to the words their fellow improvisers say, but listening extends far beyond the words we use. Learning improv gave me the aptitude to recognize how people communicate through their volume, their tone, and their body language, says Wilson. This lets me understand where students are coming from and whats motivating their behavior.Once hes figured out whats beneath the surface, he can tailor his response- whether its to offer an empathetic ear or use humor to defuse the tension. Some folks need someone who remembers how awful exams are. Some need a friend to empathize with their larger frustrations about the school, however irrelevant it is to the task at hand. Some need a clown wearing stupid shoes that they can make fun of, he explains. Improv gives me the flexibility to slip into any of those roles whenever its called for.2. Attending Punk Shows Helps Social Worker Paige DeMontigny Better Relate to Her ClientsYou wouldnt necessarily think going to punk shows would make you a better social worker. But Paige DeMontigny, whos been attending since middle school, says her long-time devotion to the punk rock scene has helped her step out of her comfort zone, have new experiences, and connect with people from different backgrounds- skills she says are essential in her role as a social w orker.Photo of Paige DeMontigny courtesy of Paige DeMontigny.DeMontigny grew up in an upper middle class town. But getting into the punk scene meant visiting venues in urban and rural areas all around New England, some as simple as a biker bar and some as secret as an apartment attached to a potato chip factory, says DeMontigny. It acclimated me to different environments that I would go into for work and took the mystique away, she adds. It encouraged me to travel, sleep in cars, get dirty. It anesthetized me to meeting people that looked different from me and grew up different ways.Being a punk rock insider also helps DeMontigny form better connections with her clients. It gives me a funny talking point during orientation icebreakers, she says, and its always something that gets a smile or second look from someone and creates a dialogue. 3. Playing the Piano Helps CEO Gene Caballero Make Tough DecisionsAs the founder of the startup GreenPal, Gene Caballero has a lot of decisions to make- and he credits the piano with helping him stay focused and able to make the right choices for his company, an online lawn care marketplace.Photo of Gene Caballero courtesy of Gene Caballero. My gruppe and I were approached for venture funding and the decision of whether to take money was weighing heavily on me, says Caballero. Instead of going back and forth between the different options in his mind, Caballero sat down and played the piano- and found the clarity he was looking for. Anytime Im feeling overwhelmed or am having issues focusing, I know that my brain needs to reset and so I play, says Caballero. I probably played more piano in that week than I ever have.Ultimately, Caballero decided to forgo the investment, a call he felt was best for his business. Playing, he says, helped resolve any insecurities he had about the decision.4. Stand-up Comedy Helps UX Designer Christina Avellan Keep Her Cool (and Her Colleagues Laughing)Christina Avellan loves stand-up comedy becaus e it helps her think on her feet and make people laugh- both skills that come in handy at her job as a UX researcher for Walmart eCommerce.Photo of Christina Avellan courtesy of Christina Avellan.I dont get flustered, says Avellan, who performs stand-up in the Portland, OR area. For example, I was running a study this week for a high-visibility project, she explains. During one interview, both the participant and the stakeholders were having technical difficulties, and I was able to troubleshoot with everyone in a non-stressful, joking way, and had everyone laughing until our tools were back up and running.5. Go-kart Racing Helps VP of Technology Marcin Kloda Navigate Ups and DownsWorking in the technology sector definitely has its highs and lows. Thanks to go-kart racing, Marcin Kloda- VP of Technology and General Manager, Americas at the global software outsourcing firm Intive- knows how to take them in stride.Ive learned that races can be long and have their ups and downs. It doe snt matter how you start, but how you finish the race, says Kloda. This type of big-picture mindset helps me better prepare for challenges at work and keeps me focused on the end goal.Photo of Marcin Kloda courtesy of Marcin Kloda.Racing has also helped Kloda stay humble as hes grown in his career. In racing, I have lost some races and won some races. There has always been someone faster, someone better, says Kloda. The humility hes learned is something that I carry with me to the workplace, and has helped me with my relationships with customers and employees. As you can see, hobbies can do more than help you have a great time- they can also help you have a great career. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and pursue that hobby. Your career will thank you

Customize this Outstanding Wholesale Sales Manager Resume Sample Customize this Outstanding Wholesale Sales Manager Resume Sample It is no secret that getting hired for a new job is not an easy task. Putting together a resume that both communicates your abilities accurately and meets the high expectations that hiring managers have is hard. One of the best ways to make sure your resume is doing its job effectively is to review example resumes. The following wholesale sales manager resume sample is the kind of document that would catch the attention of employers that read it. With the additional writing guide that is included, you can learn all the formatting techniques and resume standards to make your resume stand out from the crowd.Create Resume Eric Denner100 Broadway LaneNew Parkland, CA, 91010Cell: (555) 987-1234example-email@example.comProfessional SummaryProactive Wholesales Sales Manager constantly searching for bigger retail opportunities and new partners to expand the business. Unfortunately, it is not a guarantee that employers will read your resume. They may first take a broad look at it and might stop there if it looks unorganized or uninteresting. This sample resume has concise sections so it does not look cluttered. After you finish writing, make sure there are no instances of large, intimidating blocks of uninterrupted text or gaps of wasted space.Next, look at each section. The wholesale sales manager resume sample keeps the summary, skills, and education sections as brief as possible. In most cases, these sections should only be a few lines long. This summary is three sentences, but you can also opt to write it as three bullet points. The first two sections are primarily meant to encourage employers to read through the work history section. Finally, notice that the work history section is the longest part of the resume. This is what employers are most interested in, so you sho uld include lots of strong information. Begin with the most recent position you have held, and list the rest backward. The wholesale sales manager resume sample has a large gap in employment, which is not ideal, but it is better than the alternative of including unimportant or irrelevant positions. The importance of each position will also determine how many bullet points to include. Less-important positions can have as few as three or four, but most should have between five and eight. Most importantly, every bullet point needs to have a strong action verb for the first word. This is an expected resume standard to which you should adhere. The action words used in this resume sample can help you chose your own verbs that accurately reflect your daily responsibilities. Why You Need a Strong Wholesale Sales Manager ResumeHaving a strong resume is important because there will almost always be many candidates competing for any wholesale sales manager position for which you apply. Studies show that most employers spend an average of six seconds reviewing each resume before moving on to the next one. If there is nothing to make your resume stand out from all the others, you̢۪ll have a reduced chance of earning an interview. Additionally, statistics suggest sales manager employment will increase slightly over the next decade, which means openings are only going to become more competitive. This wholesale sales manager resume sample will help you make sure your resume is up to the challenge.Costly Wholesale Sales Manager Resume Mistakes To AvoidIn addition to summarizing your skills and experiences, your resume needs to be tailored to the position for which you are applying. It can be easy to forget that the skills you emphasize in your resume need to be focused and relevant. Some skills may be impressive but ultimately unrelated to sales management, and therefore should not be included. Notice in the wholesale sales manager resume sample that many of the entries in the skills section relate directly to making and managing sales.Additionally, the job of sales manager is a position of leadership. This means you should write your resume with confidence. Establishing that you have no trouble managing others and delegating tasks is a good idea. Finally, a beneficial way to strengthen your resume is to add specific metrics. Even if everything in your resume is true, it does not do any good if it isn̢۪t relatable. Putting in real numbers to represent previous performances adds credibility and lets employers understand how you would benefit them if hired.ConclusionBecause your resume may be the only thing employers have when deciding whether or not to offer you a chance to interview, you need to make sure your resume is as strong as possible. Use this wholesale sales manager resume sample and writing guide to create a resume that will catch their attention and portray you in the right light.

Why City Governments Give Tax Incentives to Businesses

Why City Governments Give Tax Incentives to Businesses Why City Governments Give Tax Incentives to Businesses Attracting businesses, keeping them and getting them to expand operations often involves a city providing tax incentives. While this seems to some like corporate welfare, cities do not simply give away money to corporations in these deals. Cities weigh the expected benefits with expected costs to determine whether they should proceed with a particular tax incentive package. It would be nice for citizens if local governments paid them to stay maintain residence within a city, but that̢۪s just not going to happen. One household coming to a city is not going to make a noticeable impact on the city̢۪s economy. Hundreds coming to a city will. Cities usually task their economic development directors with crafting policies that allow for cities and businesses to enter into mutually beneficial agreements on tax incentives. Cities adopt these policies so that they do not have to go back to the drawing board each time a business wants to come to town or expand. Having tax incentive policies allows a city to be up-front with businesses, accountable to citizens and mitigate the appearance of cronyism. Policies allow cities to stick to what they have already determined in their best interest while enticing new businesses and retaining existing ones. Leveraging Economic Benefits When businesses can boost the local economy, they use that as leverage. They even play cities off one another like an individual planning to buy a car will play two dealerships off one another. As soon as one city offers five years of tax abatement, a business will go to other cities seeking ten years. Businesses try to get cities to offer more than what their policies provide. City leaders must weigh the pros and cons of sticking to policy versus offering more for a really good deal. When added up over time, providing tax incentives is bad for taxpayers, but in individual situations, cities will compete with each other. When the cities are located in different states, state officials may lend a hand in attracting a business. As long as cities are willing to play the game, businesses will keep seeking tax incentives for activities they would likely do without any assistance from local government. While tax incentives are an important reason businesses choose to locate ?in ?one city over another, businesses also consider non-financial factors in their decisions. Political climate, housing prices, education, parks, and arts are other inputs into the decision-making process. Analyzing the Costs and Benefits When tax incentives are considered, city staff project what the city stands to gain by the business coming, staying or expanding. These benefits are predominantly property tax revenue and other tax revenue associated with added employees that are expected to relocate to the city or be hired from the city̢۪s existing population. If a new business buys a tract of land and builds a factory on it, the business increases the city̢۪s property tax base. The factory adds value to the otherwise vacant land. The business may propose to the city to allow it to pay a reduced property tax rate for the first few years the factory is open. This helps the business lower its tax liability while other operating costs run unusually high. Keeping with the factory example, say that the factory expects to employ 1,000 people, 900 of whom are expected to be people who move to the town because of factory jobs. The city will experience an increase in property values because of all the new home buyers. It will also receive more sales tax and user fee revenue because these people move to town. Such benefits are considered along with costs the city will incur because of the business activity. Those costs include infrastructure expansions and additional city employees necessary to serve the growth in population. Infrastructure costs could include widening streets, installing more street lighting, extending sewer lines and building new fire and police stations. Additional city employees could include more police officers, firefighters, and employees needed to support a larger organization such as accountants and administrative assistants. Doing the Deal Cities try to stick to their economic development policies because those policies have been thoroughly vetted through economic analysis, legal opinions, and the local political climate. Cities risk making mistakes when they move away from what they have carefully planned. If a city believes a tax incentive package is a good deal and that other cities may entice the business away, the city will likely make the deal even if they have to deviate from policy. The city̢۪s goal is to at least break even. City officials want the expected revenue to exceed the costs of foregone tax revenue and added operating costs. The city̢۪s economic development director is usually the city̢۪s chief negotiator in tax incentive deals. When the economic development director believes that straying from policy may be prudent, the director gathers input from other local officials and business interests such a local economic development boards, school officials and chambers of commerce. When policy is followed, additional input is not really necessary. The city manager approves any deals before they are submitted to the city council for final approval.

Networking with Fellow Law Students

Networking with Fellow Law Students Networking with Fellow Law Students Earlier this week, I listened to an interesting podcast on networking by Law School Podcaster (see my blog post on the podcast here), and Ive had networking on the brain ever since. Of all of the career advice Ive received, Id rank networking as the most important for developing my legal career. But as a law student, it was one of the career-development tools that I most neglected. With the Socratic method, outlining, finals, blue-booking, and journal writing hanging over my head, I didnt make networking a top priority like I should have.I think that the biggest networking resources that I overlooked were my fellow law students. Sure, advice and mentoring from experienced legal professionals is important. But one day, the people sitting next to you in Torts and Contracts will be those experienced attorneys. Your classmates are the future of the legal industry: future colleagues, clients, business partners, CEOs, adversaries, legal experts, judges, policy-makers, politicians, scholar s, and professors. Even though its hard to imagine the person in the next study carrel having a profound effect on your yet-to-be-defined legal career, the truth is that you never know how important one connection can be.Networking with fellow law students isnt only important for your future career, however. Its also valuable in your development as a lawyer. You can get all of the guidance you want from your mentors, but no one understands how youre feeling as you trudge through documents at 2 am like those in your same class year. Nobody appreciates your professional anxieties and insecurities like those who are on the same career timeline as you. Discussing, comparing, commiserating, and offering each other advice is a different way to grow as attorneys, one based on learning from each others experiences.

Connect With Your Children After Work -The Muse

Connect With Your Children After Work -The Muse Connect With Your Children After Work On weekends, knowing what’s going on with your kids can be as easy as watching, listening, and following (or running) along. But when you’re working, it takes some skill to figure out where their little heads have been all day. Sometimes, kids offer up every detail- and other times, it’s a challenge to pry anything from them. Reconnecting with kids after work is often a matter of asking the right questions. “When you’re a working parent, you have to be okay with picking work at work, and then you have to be okay with picking your children. And when you pick your children, you pick them 100% in that moment,” says Julie Breazile, Senior Manager of Family Support with Kindercare. “I need them to know that they’re still my priority, and I need to build an emotional connection in that short amount of time during the week.” While every kid responds to questions differently, it’s useful to have a set of tried and tested questions to get them talking. We spoke to moms about their techniques for getting to the heart of their kids’ day. The Right Question First Julie asks her 8 year old daughter Kayden and 5 year old son Brody multiple questions after childcare. The most important thing about the first question (How was your day?) isn’t the question itself, but where it takes place: In the childcare facility, with the teacher nearby. “So the teachers are there, and they’re a part of the conversation,” says Julie. “If something happened that I need to follow-up about, it doesn’t go a couple of days before I see that teacher again.” Jennifer Tanous, a Senior HR Reporting Analyst with Kindercare, is also strategic about the first question she asks her kids, 6 year old Issa and 3 1/2 year old Naya. Her husband picks them up from childcare, and they immediately call her from the car. She asks them: “Did you have your best day ever?” “I try to have them go into every day with the idea that this is going to be their best day ever,” Jennifer says. It’s a foundational part of her parenting philosophy- to let them know their mom wants them to live their best lives every day. While Julie and Jennifer pose different initial questions to their kids, both are strategic ways to let their kids know, right off the bat, that they can’t wait to hear all about their day. Favorites and Least Favorites The second part of Julie’s questioning happens during their car ride home. First, she asks her kids what their favorite thing about their day was. “I always start with the good stuff and get them to talk about that first,” Julie says. Then she asks why that particular thing was good, and what they learned about that day. “Then I try to dig into anything that bugged them or bothered them,” she says. “And then I start asking probing questions, and start digging into why they think that happened.” The bulk of Jennifer’s questions happen during bedtime, when she asks a series of five questions, four of which are similar to Julie’s: What was the most exciting thing that happened to you today? What was the worst thing that happened to you today? What made you happy? What made you sad? Jennifer says her kids recognize the nuance between the questions. The first two elicit answers about things that exceeded or didn’t meet their expectations. The second two tap into feelings. Julie’s digging into her kids’ responses aims for the same result. For both moms, their initial questions about highs and lows get the kids talking about the biggest moments of their day, which are often the easiest to verbalize. But the follow-ups address their day in emotional terms- something kids don't always know how to do on their own. Jennifer tells her kids, “I don’t want you to hide being sad, and I don’t want you to hide being happy. I want you to share those feelings.” Things You’re Grateful For And Jennifer’s fifth question? What are you thankful for? Often, it’s the same things every day- family, friends, teachers- but it helps her kids reflect on their day through the lens of gratefulness. It’s also a valuable part of their routine, and routine is comforting. “They’ve gotten so accustomed to it, that if I give them a choice between reading or answering the questions, because we don't have a lot of time, they pick the questions,” she says. Both moms say these questions help them connect with their kids, and let them know that they’re always there for them- even when they’re at work. And that’s something both working parents and their kids can be thankful for.

5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making a Big Career Change

5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making a Big Career Change 5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making a Big Career Change But is there some secret guiding them? Not at all. Like many women making a drastic change in their lives, they struggle with the unknown. Few of us make these decisions lightly. Some of the things you may weigh before making the change could include factoring in what you will lose â€" or at least, what you think you may lose. Here are five questions you should ask yourself before pulling the trigger on a life-altering career  decision. 1. Why Change Your Life and Start a New Career? Why not be happy? Youve been in the same position long enough to see the company change, and you are no longer satisfied with your job. This is what tipped the scale for my friends: - Your role changed:  A friend of mine was bumped to another section. One minute, shes leading a multimillion-dollar growth initiative at a company worth $40 billion; the next, shes assigned to the tedium of the corporate strategy unit because her  company lacked a culture of experimentation. She knew her value and quickly started the job search, receiving offers from both Twitter and Facebook. She is now enjoying her new role as a product manager at the latter. - You deserve  career advancement:  Another one of my friends felt that her small team did not allow for growth. She wrestled with moving out of EdTech, and only after months of soul-searching and career coaching did she find a perfect fit as an interactive producer for an advertising agency. - Youre seeking a challenge:  One of my friends reached the top of the ranks and was running the place like a champ, but she became bored with the minutia. She craved something more creative. Rather than taking a similar type of job with Pandora, she opted for a pay cut and now serves as a project manager for a highly-regarded agency with clients like Netflix, Amazon, and Google. - Youre in the wrong industry:  Two friends, after years of law school and big firm work, found themselves in what was (for them) the wrong career. One went directly into nursing school, while the other lived off of her savings, taking time off to find the right job â€" and is now director of development for a solar energy company. - You need a better environmental fit:  A different friends favorite boss left, leaving a management void in an already negative company culture. She left to spend a year at home with her two young  kids before landing a program management position at an innovative technology company. The result? I can assure you that none of them have ever looked back. 2. What Matters Most in Your Career? Here are some common answers Ive seen: - Flexibility:  You like the prospect of having more time to travel or work on personal projects. - Learning:  Youre looking for new challenges. - Ownership:  You want work that matches your need for a sense of fulfillment. We want money, yes, but we also want jobs that suit our lifestyles â€" which could mean fewer hours, nicer people, more freedom of choice, childcare on site, and anything else that will make us happy. Other things to considering include: Do you have the support of your significant other? Are you planning on conceiving soon? Adopting? Freezing eggs? Remaining childless? Considering what all of these things might  mean to you and your career, taking stock of them  can contribute to your decision. We tend to feel more at ease when our personal and professional lives exist together in harmony. 3. What Am I Afraid Of? Many are afraid of leaving a career theyre good at, the short-term financial insecurity, the lost camaraderie of current workplace friends, or having to start over at the bottom. Rest assured, however, that virtually  all  of these fears are experienced by confident women who make successful career transitions. One such woman, Gazelle Javantash, says, Considering how much I spent on my education and a master’s degree, I told myself I couldnt start at entry level with this much debt. So I hired a career coach. Through this process, Gazelle moved from education into the private tech sector. Her coach helped her to weigh all of these questions and identify the  role she wanted her career to play in her life. 4. What Do I Have to Gain? The answer to this question is different for everyone. Maybe your desire for a career change comes from career and personal satisfaction, or you anticipate this  new role giving you  more  free time, or this new direction provides the financial boost to start saving for retirement or a home. In any case, confident women who make career transitions know that doing so always  requires a leap of faith. 5. How Do I Ultimately Decide What to Do? How did all of these powerful women in my life come to the decision to pick up their padfolios and hit the road? We talked to our partners, and we talked to each other. Most of us, in fact, had been thinking about jumping ship for months. We would casually mention the idea in passing â€" over a glass of wine, in the pool, on an airplane, or while hiking up a mountain. We listened to one another, helped each other weigh all of the pros and cons, asked ourselves what we had to lose, and then finally delivered  our recommendations to one another. Ultimately, no one else can make the decision for you. Everyone will give you advice and try to help, but in the end, you are the only one who truly knows whats right for you. In your heart, you will know when its time for a change. The final decision will not be easy. Its never easy to choose the road less traveled and dive into something new. While change is scary, you know in your gut when its necessary. Once you do decide to take  that first step, dont look back. We did it, and you can, too. - This article originally appeared on BusinessCollective. Heather McGough is cofounder, with Eric Ries and Melissa Moore, of  Lean Startup Company. Visualizing the highest-paid job in every state

Visualizing the highest-paid job in every state Visualizing the highest-paid job in every state Want to make a lot of money? Become a doctor. That̢۪s the basic message behind our new map breaking down the highest paid occupations in every state. Almost every single top-ranking job is in the healthcare field.Click here to enlargeWe have put together a list of the highest paying jobs in every state based on annual mean wage figures, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. We created a color-coded map by occupation, letting you easily see the regional patterns at the highest end of the labor market. At the macro level, all the top paying jobs are from the medical profession. That̢۪s because we̢۪re looking at annual mean wages for large groups of people. Only some actors in California, for example, make millions of dollars. The vast majority of people don̢۪t make very much money creating films. But doctors and dentists generally make tons of money no matter where they live. The real question then is which types of medical professionals make the most money. Across the Nor thwest, there̢۪s an obvious cluster of obstetricians and gynecologists. Internists are the highest paid in only two states, Minnesota and Arkansas. Anesthesiologists do pretty well no matter where they work.Interestingly, our map indicates there isn̢۪t much variation in average incomes for the highest-paid jobs across the country. Every state boasts a wage around $250k to $390k with the exceptions of Puerto Rico ($135,510), the Virgin Islands ($150,620) and Guam ($163,180). No occupation makes millions on average, and yet, regardless of where you live, if you work one of these jobs you can expect to make some decent coin. This means that the real differentiating factor to consider is the cost of living, which determines how much money people keep after paying for their basic necessities. For example, the cost of buying a house is outrageously expensive in California compared to Ohio. An anesthesiologist only makes on average about $7,000 more in California than Ohio, but he or she would likely pay tens of thousands more housing. Although we don̢۪t recommend picking a job based solely on how much money you̢۪d make, it̢۪s always helpful to know where you stand for both income and expenses.Data: Table 1.1This article first appeared on How Much.

Heat, Work, and the First Law of Thermodynamics

Heat, Work, and the First Law of Thermodynamics Heat, Work, and the First Law of Thermodynamics Marks Practical Handbook for Mechanical Engineers calls the first law of thermodynamicsthat energy can neither be created nor destroyedone of the very important laws of nature. As an engineering science, thermodynamics has evolved piecemeal over many years and with contributions from many investigators. A basic form of the first law for simple systems states that the increase in the internal energy of a system is equal to the quantity of heat transferred to the system reduced by the quantity of work done by the system: This law is a result of the famous experiments James Joule conducted in the 1840s that identified heat as a form of energy having a unique equivalence to work. For generations before Joule, however, heat remained an enigma for scientists. Redefining the engine: Patented by the Royal Society in 1698, Savery's engine was the first to continuously convert the heat from fire into useful work to pump water from deep mines.Engineering an Engine In 1698 Thomas Savery designed the first engine that continuously converted heat from fire into useful work. His goal was to create a machine that would be more effective at removing water from deep mines than using horses hitched to a turnstile. His engine relied on a coal-fired steam boiler connected to a cylinder that was double-valved to a suction pipe and a discharge pipe. When the cylinder was filled with steam, it was down-washed with cold water, causing the steam to condense and form a partial vacuum, drawing water up the suction pipe. The steam supply valve was then opened and the boiler pressure forced the water up the discharge pipe for ground level disposal. In 1712 Savery partnered with Thomas Newcomen to build an advanced version with a piston between the atmospheric air and the steam, the piston connected to one end of a rocking beam. The other end of the beam was attached to rods that went down into the mine to operate the water pumps. A second innovation was to inject cold water directly into the steam to condense it, which greatly sped up the process. While restoring a Newcomen engine at the University of Scotland in 1765, James Watt discovered about 80 percent of the steam was wasted by premature condensation on the cold walls of the cylinder. To reduce this effect, he added a small condensing chamber adjacent to the main cylinder, thus letting the walls remain at a high temperature. He then converted the reciprocating motion of the beam to rotary motion, making the engines more compatible with mills and factories. Watt also worked with Joseph Black, a professor of physical chemistry at the University of Scotland, to determining specific heats and latent heats for many compounds. This involved defining the British thermal unit (Btu) as the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit. In the late 1700s Benjamin Thompson conducted experiments on gunpowder and later supervised a cannon boring factory. During cannon boring he noticed that the brass chips that left the barrel were hotter if the cutting tool was dull than if it was sharp. By collecting them in a pail of water as a crude calorimeter he could calculate the thermal effect, but was unable to instrument the cutting tool to measure the work input. In 1840 James Joule discovered what is universally known today as Joules Law: E = I2R where E is the rate at which electric energy is dissipated when an electric current passes through a resistance. He later devised a simple apparatus for determining the equivalence of heat and work that consisted of a well-insulated rigid chamber containing a viscous fluid and fitted with a rotating propeller. He observed that for a given fluid, a definite amount of work expended always caused a definite rise in temperature of the fluid. In modern terms, he discovered the property internal energy, U. Joules experiment established heat as transformable energy. Newtons mathematical expression of the first law is the result of Joules work with the usual sign conventions and with all terms expressed in the same units. It is essentially a statement of the conservation of all forms of energy. The world is rapidly approaching a crisis in the field of energy, as worldwide demand for fossil fuels continues to stress a diminishing supply. This impending shortfall has led to numerous investigations into alternate sources of energy, such as solar, geothermal, and biological, each having serious political implications when extended to an effective scale. Since all these approaches must satisfy the laws of thermodynamics, perhaps better communications between policy-makers and thermodynamicists would result in more rapid progress and better solutions. [Adapted from Heat, Work, and the First Law by Howard W. Butler, for Mechanical Engineering, March 2008.] In 1698, Thomas Savery designed the first engine that continuously converted heat from fire into useful work.
